Providing Guidance on Specialty Care

Children may experience a range of medical conditions that could benefit from the expertise of a pediatric specialist in a particular field. We emphasize the coordination of all healthcare providers involved in a child's treatment. Our role involves working with specialists to ensure the best care for your child, including providing guidance on when specialty care is recommended.

In order to facilitate a productive relationship between the patient, primary care provider, and specialist, it is typically essential for us to conduct an initial assessment at our office before making a referral. This step enables us to furnish the specialist with comprehensive and current information regarding the child's health condition, as well as details about their recent physical examination. Additionally, this allows us the opportunity to potentially consult with the specialist via phone while the patient is present in our office, especially if the health concern requires urgent intervention.

Our Referral Department is here to help coordinate your child’s healthcare needs beyond the services provided in our office. Please contact our Referral Department for assistance with:

  • Specialist referrals – including appointments with pediatric specialists and other healthcare providers
  • Prior authorizations and insurance approvals – including requests for medications, treatments, procedures, and services that require insurance approval before they can be completed
  • Specialty imaging authorizations – assistance with obtaining insurance approval for advanced imaging studies such as CT scans, MRIs, and other specialty diagnostic tests
  • PT-1 transportation requests – assistance with arranging MassHealth transportation services when eligible
  • Durable Medical Equipment (DME) – including medical supplies and equipment such as pull-ups, wheelchairs, assistive devices, helmets and other medically necessary items
  • Specialty formulas and related medical nutrition needs

Our team will help guide you through the referral process, coordinate required documentation, and assist with communication between our office and outside providers or suppliers.
